The United Arab Emirates is federation comprising the emirates (states) of Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman, Umm Al Qaiwain, Ras Al Khaimah, and Fujairah. The UAE, including 200 islands and covering area of 83,600sq. Km, is strategically positioned close to the entrance of the Arabian Gulf with extensive coastline on its west and north facing shores, and an easterly coastline bordering the Arabian Sea. Contrasting landscapes of precipitous rocky mountains, wind-blown and deserts, low-lying crystalline. 

The population of the UAE is estimated to be 4 million in 2005, includes more than 3.2 million non nationals. The growth at present is 2.9 per cent per year. The UAE has shown development and changes that surprised the whole world since the early 70s when the country was mainly desert with few tribes living mainly on fishing and trade with India & Iran. The UAE has now become the centre of trade and the main tourist attraction in the region.

Arabic is the country's official language, although English & Urdu is widely spoken, and Islam is the state religion.
